Villa Cornaro is considered one of Palladio’s most important works. During the design process, Palladio developed a protruding pedimented portico that subsequently became the most emblematic feature of Palladian architecture in Europe and the United States. Although the architectural importance of Villa Cornaro is well recognized, no major surveys of the building have been made since the 18th century.
Measured with modern technology, Villa Cornaro’s survey is presented through 14 gatefold drawings, approx. 16.5 x 23.4 inches each, comprising a complete set of plans, elevations, sections, and window schedules (scale 1:100). The plans and window schedules are thoroughly dimensioned, and the elevations and sections include 5-meter grid lines and window labels for cross reference. The essays provide analyses of the results. Branko Mitrovic ’s essays explore the proportional system and the classical orders of the villa in the context of Palladio’s works in the early 1550s. Stephen R. Wassell’s essay determines the size of the measuring module—the piede (foot)—used in designing the villa. Essays by Tim Ross and Melanie Bourke analyze the design of the principal doors and staircases.
